The first snow of the season hit Colorado in the wee early hours of the morning. It’s always a bit of a shocker to go from shorts to gloves and snow shoes in the same week, but that is why I looooove Colorado!

Snow season always gets me in the mood for reading – think a good book, a cup of steaming hot cocoa with marshmallows, a fire, a cozy blanket, and quiet introspection! Ah, Bliss! The two times a year I love to grab a stockpile of good reading material is:

The beginning of summer – nothing says beach bumming like old paperback mysteries and epic fantasy novels*!

The middle of winter – when there’s nothing you’d rather do than curl up with a great book and try to stay warm!

The first novel that always crosses my mind in winter is “The Shining” by Stephen King. I know I’ve talked about it before, but it really is one of my favorite go to scary books. If you’ve only seen the movie (or the mini-series), please do yourself a favor and read King’s story. It’s quite different in many respects than the Jack Nicholson flick, and a very good and quick read. Plus, if you read it before September 24th, 2013 – you will be ready for the sequel (being written right now) called “Dr. Sleep”.

Doctor Sleep
Announcement Date: May 8th, 2012
Projected Release Date: September 24th, 2013
On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Of course, talk of this ever popular book ALWAYS makes me think of The Stanley Hotel, which is as much of a snowy Colorado icon as the beloved Stephen King book and movie!

Fans of the Kubrick movie may also want to check out the new documentary Room 237 - I’m hearing GREAT things about this film!

In honor of all things snowy and Stanley related – I’d like to share this with you. Enjoy!

Ok, this is probably one of the funniest Colorado legends I’ve seen in a while.

While researching for a good old fashioned ghost story, I ran across a link for Colorado tall tales. There are three great bits of folklore and legend there, but my favorite is this one, called Fur-Bearing Trout. For all three tales by S. E. Schlosser, check out this link.

Fur-Bearing Trout

A Colorado Tall Tale

retold by

S. E. Schlosser

Now it happened that there was a mining camp in Colorado where more than an average number of the miners were bald. An enterprising hair tonic salesman from Kentucky decided to take advantage of this golden opportunity, so he made the trip north. It was a rainy summer evening. The salesman was headed towards the mining camp with four bottles of hair tonic under his arm. As he was crossing one of the trout streams which lead to the Arkansas River, the salesman slipped and dropped two bottles of hair tonic into the water. The bottles broke, and the hair tonic spilled into the stream.

Not too long after this incident, the fishermen along the Arkansas developed a new method for catching trout. They’d head to the bank of the river carrying a red and white barber pole and some scissors. Then they would set up the barber pole and call out: “Get your free shave and a hair cut here”. All the trout whose fur had grown to long or who needed their beards trimmed would hop right out of the water and be picked up by the fishermen. It wasn’t until the mills began muddying the waters so much that the fish couldn’t see the barber poles that the practice died out.

HAUNTED, A TRUE GHOST STORY
Sometimes it is not your home that becomes haunted; sometimes there is a haunting of people. I know it to be true because that is what happened to me. I didn’t know it then, but the same ghost that was haunting me was also haunting a complete stranger that I would eventually meet. This ghost was so persistent it actually changed the paths of our lives.

It started with a dream for Tim. A ghost taunting him about things that happened to him that seemed so real he actually started to believe it himself even though he had no genuine recollection of it.

This was one of his first experiences with a visit from the ghost in his dreams. He found himself standing in the woods in the middle of a dense fog, it was misting to the point of almost raining. He blew on his hands to warm them and noticed he could see his breath when he exhaled. His feet were cold and as he looked down at them and noticed he did not have the heavy insulated boots on he normally wore when he went hiking, but instead a rather thin pair of tall leather boots. He stared at them feeling a bit confused. They were not his boots, but yet he recognized them. He stomped his feet a few times to get some circulation going in his feet. His legs were sore as though he had hiked for a very long time or had stood still for too long and they had fallen asleep.

He looked around himself to try to figure out where he was. Night was beginning to fall and the darkness mixed with the fog made it very difficult to distinguish his surroundings. He picked a direction and proceeded to began making his way through the woods, squinting in the dark trying to make out his surroundings.

He felt he had to urinate so he walked up to a tree and reached down to unzip his fly. He felt for the metal fastener and realized there was no zipper; instead he found large clumsy buttons. He managed to undo them enough so he could relieve himself and then had a terrible time closing them back up with his fingers being so cold. All he saw around him was the shadows of tremendous dark trees in the fog.

He found he had no choice but to continue on, trying to maintain a straight path, thinking sooner or later he would have to walk out of the woods. He stopped and listened momentarily to see if he could hear anything or anyone around him, but there was only total silence that fell on his ears. He continued on hearing only his own breathing and the sounds of his feet on the dead leaves and twigs snapping beneath the weight of his boots.
Suddenly very far off in the distance he thought he heard a voice call out. He stopped suddenly in mid stride and carefully listened. Again there was only complete silence. He took another step and then heard something once again. It was very faint and far away but definitely a voice calling out.

“Who’s there?” he called out in the darkness.

No one answered him; he continued to stand silent allowing his ears to pick up the slightest sound or movement. Again, he strained his eyes to pick up anything moving anywhere around him; turning in a full circle he checked all directions. In front of him he could just barely make out a very faint light flickering very far off in front of him. The moment he noticed the light he again heard a voice from the same direction. He aimed himself towards the light and set out in the direction of it taking long strides while he kept focused on it so as not to lose sight of it again, he felt lost. He knew it was very important not to lose sight of that flickering light.

He traveled towards it as quickly as he was able to, traveling through the thick underbrush and fallen branches, tripping and falling several times onto the cold wet ground. His palms were scratched and bleeding from trying to soften his fall whenever he tripped, but even so he could barely feel the pain. The light was growing slightly larger but it was an odd sort of light not steady like a flashlight would be but instead flickered like a flame would when a fire was lit in the dark.

He called out several times but no one replied. The only sound he could hear was the loud thundering of his heart beating from the exertion of travelling so quickly through the woods and his own heavy breathing. He felt as though he had travelled for miles and hours, but yet the light seemed to grow further away from him instead of closer. Exhausted now he knew he would have to stop for a bit.

He backed up against a large tree being very careful of never taking his eyes away from the light now so very far off in the distance. He laid his back against it and slowly slid down it into a squatting position against its trunk. He was trying to take some of the weight off his aching legs and feet. He leaned there trying to slow his heartbeat by drawing in long deep breathes and letting them back out very slowly, trying to allow his lungs to absorb as much oxygen as possible, it did not seem to be working. He felt as though he was being suffocated slowly, it was almost as though somebody were choking the air off at his windpipe with their hands.

He began to realize that he was approaching unconsciousness as his legs gave way from under him and he fell to the ground hard on his buttocks, the only thing keeping him upright was the huge tree trunk he had been leaning on. His eyes seemed to be losing focus as he continued to struggle to focus on the flickering light.

The trees already distorted in the fog were beginning to waver as though he were looking at them through water; his head was pounding in unison to his own heartbeat. The flickering light began to diminish but to a mere speck and was almost completely gone now. He reached his hand out to it as though he were trying to grab it and hold onto it to prevent it from disappearing from his sight completely.

“Please,” he mumbled, “please don’t leave me here alone.”

He felt drool drip in long strings from the corner of his mouth as he spoke and run down his neck. It felt as though his blood was trapped in his head causing his face to swell and bruise from the pressure. His eyelids felt as though they also were beginning to swell over his eyes so severely he had but a sliver of vision remaining through them, left now with nothing than mere slits to see through. He reached down and tried to rub his legs but he could not even feel his own hands on his flesh. They were cold and stiff to his touch. He felt tremendous fear.

He knew he was fading now from consciousness, he thought that perhaps it was time for him to pass from here; he had given in to the thought. He raised his eyes one last time towards the direction where the flickering light had been and suddenly there it was directly before him, huge and overwhelming like a great fire, the light now so bright it burned his eyes and the heat of it so intense his face felt as though the flesh were melting from it.
A small bit of the flame fell from the mass and landed on something lying in the grass near him. It almost looked like a belt or a strap to him. It ignited from the flame and began to burn following its length towards him, climbing up his chest and within inches of his neck. He patted on it desperately and felt above the flame, he realized that the strap was wrapped around his neck. He pulled at it desperately trying to pull it away from him but it seemed to be buried in the very flesh of his neck.

“Someone please help me,” he called out in the darkness.

Suddenly the pressure from his neck was gone and he could feel air fill his lungs once again. The fire disappeared simultaneously, but now there was a figure standing before him. As his vision cleared he realized it was a woman. She was standing in front of him with her head oddly cocked to one side.

“You must do as I say,” he heard her words in his head. That was when he woke. He went to the bathroom to splash cold water on his face. When he leaned forward to dry his face he noticed a mark on his neck. It almost looked like a tiny part of a rope burn. If it was just a dream how could it leave a physical mark?

My experiences also began with a dream, but I would eventually physically see the ghost just as Tim did. This was my first dream that started the whole haunting for me.
I found myself standing alone on a long narrow gravel road. It was very dark. There was a damp gray mist rolling along the ditches, almost appearing as though it were a gray ghost lurking against the total blackness that had enveloped me. I could see, despite the darkness, that tremendous trees lined both sides of the road beside me. They had no leaves; their branches were very long and black, blacker than the darkness itself was. They stretched out over the road from both sides, as though they were trying to touch each other above me, but then had somehow become snarled and twisted at their spiny tips; and now interlocked and tangled, they formed a tunnel effect above me and around me.

Despite the heavy mist and the darkness, I could still see clearly down the road before me and far off into the distance. There, in a pinpoint of light, I observed a shadow-like figure that appeared to be moving towards me. Even though I was deep in sleep, I could actually smell the dampness of the air and the aroma of the wet rotting bark of the huge black trees. I felt fear beginning to flow through me, clenching my body, paralyzing my legs and feet, and causing me to be unable to move them. I felt as though I was standing in hardened cement.

The figure continued to move slowly and deliberately towards me, making short jerky movements with every step it took. It seemed to take endless hours for it to reach me. I watched as it moved closer and closer. With no way for me to flee, I could only observe and wait. Now, finally, but a few yards from me, the figure abruptly stopped and stood completely motionless directly in front of me. The fog was now so dense I felt as though I were looking through very thick dirty glass that distorted the face and made it near impossible for me to make out any distinct features. I could feel the cold heavy air weighing on my skin. I glanced down to my forearm and observed that the dampness of the mist had formed a few tiny little beads of liquid on it. I watched as they suddenly gathered together to form one big water droplet that tickled me as it trickled off of my skin and toppled to the ground in slow motion. I had a sudden flashback of memory before my eyes. I saw my tears landing on top of the grease in my bowl of soup the night I learned of my mother’s impending death. I lifted my eyes back up to the figure, startled that it was now but a few inches from me. The mist had thinned enough to clearly see the features of the face. It was a woman; she was looking at me in a very odd sort of a way. She spoke to me, but her lips were not moving. It was as though I heard her with my mind.
“It is time for you to change.” That was all I heard, I found myself sitting up in my bed. The dream had sent chills down my arms. I reached to rub them and found them to be damp to the touch as though I had actually been in a damp fog.

This started many events that deeply affected mine and Tim’s life. It was a scary time for both of us, but eventually we found what the ghost was really after. They haunt you for a reason; there is something that they want from you. Sometimes you eventually find out what that is. This is actually based on a true story. I wrote a book about it if you are interested in everything that happened to me and this stranger. It is called, “Haunted” by Jules V Ness and is sold on Amazon. A hug to all of you that have had real experiences and no one to tell them to, know there are others out there that truly do believe.

Almost everyone locally is aware of the ghosts at the old Tivoli Brewery site on the UCD/Metro State shared campus in downtown Denver. Having gone to school down there for years in the mid 90s to early 00s, I heard my share of tales. I also had my skepticism because I never felt anything while there. I’d been in the student union (location of the old brewery and location of the said hauntings) millions of times. But, I guess that doesn’t mean it’s not haunted.

Check out this video of an investigation a few years ago:

Recently, the Ghost Adventures stopped by Denver and did an episode about the Peabody Whitehead Mansion on Grant Street. There is a little clip of the GAs coming to the Auraria campus to talk to a professor about that case, but they took a brief sidetrip to the Tivoli to check out their ghosts. Take a look…(Tivoli info starts at about 12:27)

The Ghost Adventures made a stop in my old stomping grounds in Denver, CO not so long ago to research a haunting at the Peabody Whitehead Mansion on Grant St. This is SO cool for so many reasons.

1 – I find the Ghost Adventures show HIGHLY entertaining.

2- I lived a block and a half away from the Peabody for more than 5 years.

3- Of those five years, I walked past that mansion more times than I could count and can say that I definitely feel something going on here.

I first heard about the Peabody’s haunted nature during one of the original ghost tours I took in Denver in 1993 (may have been 1994, time gets fuzzy that far back) and I was really excited to hear about the paranormal activity from this building. I’d always felt something different in this block. Not different bad, but different strong. I walked this street daily going to and from work for several years.

Another haunted neighbor of the Peabody Mansion

I also feel that the old mansion directly across from my apartment building has some ghost energy attached to it. In fact, I feel the energy strongest from this building, but there have never been any documented stories from here, and I’ve never been in contact with anything myself – so I cannot say what is there. But I definitely feel it whenever I’m near. What could the story behind this building be?

A while ago my family and I decided to trek down to the Convention Center in Denver and catch a local tour on Banjo Billy’s Bus.

We’d heard many great things about the tour and really wanted to check it out. In summer you get the open air treatment which is soooo nice. He’ll even tell you a scary tale or two about Denver’s past, so buckle up and take a trip on the best little mobile shanty in the west!

Banjo Billy’s Bus

We had a great time listening to Banjo Billy’s tales and traveling around all the area hot spots like the Capital Building, the Governor’s Mansion, Cheesman Park, Botanical Gardens, the Brown Palace, and more! Billy and co. definitely make you feel like family on your tour and they go to great lengths to make your stay comfortable and entertaining (be prepared for trivia questions). My favorite parts though were (what else) the ghost stories and murder mystery tales.

I loved his retelling of the Brown Palace Murders (featuring Isabel and John Springer). Few can spin a tale like Billy. But my hands-down favorite stops were the Croke-Patterson Mansion (one of THE most haunted places in Denver’s downtown area) and the Grant Humphries Mansion, both of which will be full featured pages soon on the Mysterious Colorado Website. (check back soon!)

Croke-Patterson Mansion

For now, you may want to take the Banjo Billy Bus tour to learn more about these frightening stories – Learn why guard dogs jumped to their death from the 3rd story Croke Patterson Mansion, and learn about the web of lies and deceit surrounding the mysterious suicide of one of the Grant Humphries former residents.

Note: The tour is not all ghost stories, but if you like spooky tales plan to take their special ghost tour in the fall (around Halloween time) which are totally dedicated to haunted stories and places. Banjo Billy’s tours run in Denver and Boulder, CO.

Thanks for a great day in the city, Banjo Billy!

Oh hell yeah!

My two alter egos collide in this one verrry awesome video. My love for the paranormal (hence this site), and my overwhelming adoration for The Gamers: Dorkness Rising (and all things geek). If you enjoy DND style gaming, and you should, then you already know about Dorkness Rising. If you haven’t heard about it then do yourself a favor and GO SEE IT!!! It used to be on Netflix for free, but it’s under $20 to own, so do yourself a favor and add it to your collection. It’s great fun, especially if you game, or do any game-con style revelry.

Anyway, what I wanted to show you was this. It’s a video project Called Geek Seekers starring Jen Page (from Dorkness Rising). The project is looking to get funding from folks like us who want to see the project go forward. Take a look it looks hillarious. awesome. OMG. Then donate.

Basic premise –

Geek Seekers

A Web Series About Geeking the Unknown

If the truth is out there, who better to find it than a couple of geeks?

Geek Seekers International searched far and wide, interviewing thousands of applicants* before deciding that the two perfect candidates were well-known geeks Jen Page and Monte Cook. These two geeks–some might say uber-geeks–have the knowledge, the skills, and the necessary lack of sense to track down the truth about the mysteries of our world. No danger is too great. No mystery too deep. No haunted house too scary** for the…

GEEK SEEKERS!

Geek Seekers is a web series about geeks and the paranormal–two great tastes that taste great together, we think. In each episode two geeks will investigate some strange location or phenomena. Ghosts, UFOs, bigfoot… these are the kinds of things the Geek Seekers will investigate. In the geekiest way possible. In Geek Seekers, you’ll see a mixture of real investigations, geekly discussions, and the occasional bit of silliness, just for good measure.

What will the Geek Seekers find? Ghosts? Ogopogo? Aliens? What craziness will they instigate on their own? What trouble will they find themselves in as they do this crazy stuff?

Now here’s the coolest part. If you donate you can get some awesome goodies. For example, at the $150 lvl you get your name on the backers list, a copy of the DVD, and a special invitation to a live Geek Seekers “Investigate the Paranormal” event held at GenCon, a convention held in August in Indianapolis (backer must provide his or her own way to Indianapolis and the convention).

What I really want, though, is the $500 lvl WOWZA prize: You get all of the above rewards, plus an invitation to participate in a D&D game with Jen and Monte at GenCon (backer must provide his or her own way to Indianapolis and the convention).

How cool would that be?! Anyone with a spare $500 who wants to donate in my name, please feel free.

Stay scared,

Tammy

Everyone knows that at Halloween the veil between our world and the “other side” is at it’s thinnest and that is why ghosts and hauntings are heavily associated with that time of year. Unless you are like me and ghosts and the paranormal encompass a lot of what I’m thinking about ANY time of year. But anyway, if that is true, and the veil that separates our worlds is easiest to traverse around the end of October, then wouldn’t November also be a pretty easy time to pop through that veil and say hello? Or is it like trying to hop on to an overcrowded elevator – the door to the “other side” closes when you’ve only got your foot in. Ouch.

Whether or not there is thin-veil-residue over the weeks following Halloween, I’ve found some pretty neat stories about hauntings and ghosts associated with Thanksgiving and the month of November. Here’s a little compilation of some of the more interesting ones…

Thanksgiving Ghosts – from the Brush / Ft. Collins, Colorado area in 2007

We were driving home from Brush to Fort Collins, Colorado, and it was starting to get dark, just barely. My mom is totally psychic, she has small stuff like premonitions and things like that every once in a while. It started mostly when she saw two guys standing by a telephone pole, staring at her. And I’ll tell you this now, my mom never lies to anyone! And so she was waving at them….

Let’s go outside Colorado, to the nearby state of Arizona (and California) for this next tale. Arizona ghost hunter travels: Thanksgiving at Folsom Prison

They say the Folsom Phantom is the spirit of a prison guard killed during a 1927 prison riot on Thanksgiving Day. Hopefully it wasn’t over the holiday meal. Two Folsom prison guards died during the November 1927 uprising. On Thanksgiving Day, Ray Singleton was stabbed to death as he guarded inmates leaving the prison library after a movie. Prison guard, Charles Gillies had a fatal heart attack while he manned his post at the prison’s front gate. The riot lasted two days.

Haunted Thanksgiving: Paranormal Report -another story from 2007, this one from blog.area51.org (poor Gran!)

I heard my Gran tell Mom that she had heard strange footsteps in the house the night before but Gramp told her she was crazy and let it alone. In the middle of the night, she went to use the bathroom and saw a “person made of shadows” heading towards the kitchen…

And what sucks worse than having to work on a holiday? Working in a haunted building on a holiday. Haunted Thanksgiving at the Office -

By this time we knew we were dealing with something abnormal. It still could of been an abnormal office worker, but I doubt it. We walked out of the breakroom and searched the building one more time. But there was nothing. We didn’t hear footsteps, or see any cars driving in the parking lot.

Last but not least, here’s a bit of fiction to tide you over until you can bring out the story of Ebenezer Scrooge after black Friday. This tale is called The Ghost of Thanksgiving by Armand A. Gagnon. Grab a cup of Earl Gray and read the whole thing!

He was uninvited: indeed he wasn’t there. He had somehow appeared, coming out of the woods on that cold and dreary Thanksgiving Day, knocking on our door seeking shelter from the storm. And what an odd holiday evening that it turned out being because of him…

Happy Cranberry and Pumpkin Pie Season to all!
